The Gome had a large part to play in the history of Dale Abbey, for not only did she add to the hermit's chapel in Depedale but she also persuaded her nephew to found a monastery there. However, it took four attempts before Dale Abbey got off the ground, as it were. From about 1170 to 1200, three different sets of canons (who, like monks, took the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but


	were also ordained priests) tried to establish a monastery at Dale. They all failed, basically because the land was still forest and they had nowhere to grow crops or pasture animals, and were too poor to survive. Around 1200 though, the situation improved, and a handful of canons set up the Abbey. These were Premonstratensian canons, an order founded by St. Norbert at Premontre in France. They wore unbleached white habits and lived an austere, strictly disciplined life of worship, service and hard work. The inauguration service of the Abbey dedicated to Saint Mary, was held on the 15th August 1204. The basic builing took about a hundred years to complete but other buildings were added and improvements made throughout the Abbey's working life. As abbeys go, Dale was medium-sized: it housed an abbot plus twenty-three canons in its heyday, dwindling to fifteen or sixteen in latter years. At least four of these would not normally be in residence as they served as parish priests to the churches of Stanton-by-Dale, Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston and Heanor. The Abbey was self-supporting and self-sufficient. Over the years benefactors gave farms to it, which were worked either by lay-brothers attached to the Abbey or leased out to local farmers. (When the Abbey was dissolved in 1538 it owned some 24,000 acres of land.) The canons spent some of their time growing vegetables and herbs, and some were in charge of lay-brothers manning the bakery and the brew house. The Abbey owned many mills, most of which can no longer be traced. Seven services were held each day, beginning at 2a.m. and ending at 6p.m., and canons were expected to spend several periods of their day reading, studying and meditating on the gospel. The sick were well cared for in the infirmary-the canons using both herbal medicines and the power of prayer in their healing ministry. The Abbey never turned away a visitor, whether rich or poor, but welcomed, fed and shared its peace with all guests. It is wonderful to see the three ministries of worship, healing and hospitality returning again to Dale, as God renews the work of Church and Abbey here. Henry VIII suppressed the monasteries in and around the year 1538. They were closed and their assets were sold off. The money went to the Crown. The vast majority of Dale Abbey's belongings, and the site itself, were sold to Francis Pole of Radbourn, near Derby. These included the furnishings and equipment even down to the smallest item.

A night alone, just me and the remote.
A new 55-inch big screen,
Yes, my friends they would gloat.
HDTV ready, twenty speakers with Dolby sound.
Careful with the volume,
So I won't knock the walls down 600 channels,
that is what the installer promised me.
Then he hooked up the cable and satellite to my TV.
Now for the big moment, a push of the power button.
I sat patiently, but alas no picture or sound 'there was nothing!
I ran to the TV, to see what had gone wrong.
I checked all the cables.
'What the heck is going on?'
Angry, upset, sitting on the floor looking down,
The desire struck me to throw the lot around.
Taking a deep breath, I mumbled'
'Your not going to win!'
But looking over the mess' where do I begin?
Putting everything back, starting with the TV,
Soon the real problem became apparent to me.
From behind the couch was a cable, black and thin.
It was the extension cord...and it wasn't even plugged in.

Ah, we are here on the grounds of Nottingham Castle! Although the actual Castle is now a mansion, the site was a stronghold for centuries - since Roman times at least, when it was known as Caesar's Tower. A gust of breeze chills the back of your neck as you ascend the path to the entrance. Do we sense the presence of the ghost, curious as to who is about? And who IS the Ghost of Nottingham Castle, anyway? Is it the unfortunate "Lackland" King John? His mother, the captive Eleanor of Aquitaine? Or the spirits of the many noble and common souls who have expired in the dungeon? Some of our players have insisted that the ghost is really Henry II, who built onto William the Conqueror's motte-and-bailey castle - adding the 'King's bed chamber', a 'house for the King's falcons', and a great hall with aisles in the centre of the Middle Bailey which would hold parliaments and entertainments. At times Henry II also "held" his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, in confinement at Nottingham Castle.

'To attack the Castle is an awesome task and you can only admire King Richard's valiant, almost reckless, attempt to storm it. Since the south and west cliffs are 130 feet high, the defenders only have to defend the north and east and if you look closely at the Castle's fortifications on these two sides you will find that the walls are very strong.

And the watch towers are regularly spaced ahead of the Castle wall putting any assailant well within range of the defenders' deadly arrows and missiles. This outer wall is 40 feet high and 15 feet thick at the bottom stretching 100 yards either side of the Castle gate and surmounted with battlements reinforced with six bastions at regular intervals. It would need a big siege engine to break through these walls.

Alternatively, you could storm the Castle gate but you would need to first cross the outer stone bridge over the ravine and overcome the drawbridge, not forgetting that the Castle gate is flanked by two drum towers with slit windows for firing arrows at you as you attack.

Forcing your way through the Castle gate is only the first step. At the top of the hill you will have to cross another bridge, followed by a moat with a drawbridge that has another gate for you to fight through, before you reach the main stronghold.

If by some miracle you have breached this gate you will face the impregnable keep. Built of squared stone 15 feet thick and cemented with mortar that sets like stone, the rectangular keep is four stories high with a tower at each corner and pilaster buttresses. There are no windows, only loop-holes through which defenders fire arrows at you.

You can only enter the keep from one direction - up an outside staircase at the top of which you'll find the first of three doors. The passage above the first door holds arrow-loops to enable defenders to snipe at you. Having battled past that, more arrows will come at you from a slit above the middle door before a flight of steps takes you up to the first floor. Confronting you now is a portcullis where boiling lead will pour down on your head from holes above the door.

Narrow steps take you up to the top floor and final stronghold usually occupied by the Governor who will fight to hold the Castle till his dying breath. Unless your name is Richard the Lionheart is advisable not to try and storm this formiddable

Dale Abbey

Dale Abbey is situated 3 miles South West of Ilkeston off the A6096 road, 6 miles North East of Derby. Once known as Depedale this tranquil little village contains a tiny church, a pub, a school and the remains of an abbey founded here by Augustinian monks in the 13th century.

The curious little church of All Saint's, measuring just 26feet by 25 feet, probably one of the smallest in the country, shares a roof with an adjoining farmhouse. The church dates back originally to the mid 12th century, altered in 1480, to give it it's present form. It contains a pulpit that dates from 1634 and the whole interior appears rather crammed with it's box pews and open benches. The farmhouse was once possibly used as an infirmary for the Abbey. For some time before 1820 it was used as a pub called the Blue Bell, the bar being used as a vestry, with a door into the aisle. It was rebuilt in 1883.

Behind the church is an ancient area of woodland containing beech, ash, oak and lime trees. Situated in the wood is Hermit Cave, hewn out of the sandstone cliff by a 12th century Derby baker who wished to live a life as a recluse. It is well preserved, measuring six yards by three with a doorway, two windows, a peephole and a niche for a light. A story goes that, one day when Ralph Fitz-Geremund had come from Normandy to hunt in his English woods, he found the hermit, and, touched with pity for his poverty, gave him not only the site of the hermitage but a tithe of this mill at nearby Borrowash. Then the hermit built himself a more pretentious oratory and a cottage to end his days.

The Abbey was a house of Premonstratensian Canons, founded about 1200 and completed about 1250, growing in importance and wealth until it's dissolution in 1538. All that remains is a 40ft high chancel window standing in a grassy field. Excavations have shown the church to have possessed transepts 100ft in length, a crossing tower, a cloister 85 ft square and a nave of unknown length. Some of the remains of the building can be found in houses around the village.

There is a village school and a pub on the main road called the Carpenters Arms. Not far away is the 18th century Cat and Fiddle windmill, the only one left of its kind in Derbyshire.
